An excerpt from the September 21, 2023 AmCham Shanghai Automotive Committee monthly update, where Bill Russo did a deep dive on China auto shipments and rising exports.

Highlights:

  • August shipments of 2.58 million vehicles include 846,000 New Energy Vehicles (32.8%), and 408,000 exports (15.8%)
  • China is now the largest auto export nation with 2.94 million vehicles exported through August
  • 2.22 million (75%) of Chinese exports are powered by internal combustion engines
  • 730,000 Made-in-China exports are New Energy Vehicles, and Tesla’s 235,000 exports represent a 32% share of this number.

  • Companies with capacity overhang, especially for ICE, are under a great deal of pressure to export.  For example, Chery exported more cars in 2023 than it has sold in China.
  • 18% of Chinese exports went to Russia, 9% to Mexico – virtually all of these are powered by gasoline.
