16 Sep Renault-Nissan agrees deal to make electric cars in China
The Financial Times, August 29, 2017
The Renault-Nissan Alliance has announced plans to make electric vehicles in China alongside local carmaker Dongfeng Motor Corp, in a deal that will see foreign carmakers integrating operations with a Chinese partner on an unprecedented scale.
The venture is also part of a rush by foreign carmakers to produce electric vehicles (EVs) in China, the world’s largest market for battery-powered cars.
The new joint venture, eGT New Energy Automotive, will design a new EV that is jointly developed by the three companies on a sport utility vehicle platform of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, according to a Renault press statement.
“The sharing of the platform is the news here, which is further than most foreign carmakers have gone,” said Bill Russo, a former Chrysler executive who is managing director of Gao Feng Advisory in Shanghai.
