Bill Russo, Founder & CEO of Automobility spoke on CNBC’s Street Signs Asia program on April 6th.  He shared his view about how the battery swapping system of Taiwanese e-scooter company Gogoro can be replicated in many East and South Asian markets where “powered two-wheelers are the predominant form of mobility.”

Automobility’s views on Gogoro:

  • Gogoro is not just an electric scooter hardware company but they have built a smart swappable battery solution that adds a revenue-generating services component to their business model.
  • As such its business is not measured purely on the basis of units sold, but how much services revenue per user is generated from their platform
  • Gogoro is a technology player with their swappable smart batteries which vastly improve the productivity of electric scooters for delivery services by minimizing downtime for charging.  It also makes them a player in the energy storage and services ecosystem linked to the grid.
  • The scooter and energy brand is also teaming with ProLogium Technology to develop a swappable solid-state EV battery – which can increase safety, range and reduce weight for the Smart eScoooter.
  • They have built a diverse ecosystem of investors including large-scale manufacturers like Foxconn and Hero MotoCorp to access supply chain economies of scale along with deep pocketed sovereign funds like Temasek.
  • They also have wisely built local ecosystem partnerships in the world’s largest 2-wheeler markets like China (Dachangjiang and Yadea) and India (Hero MotoCorp)
